Any one please tell me what is Avani avittam? when is avani avittam in 2013?
i heard avani avittam only celebrated by Brahmins community is it true? actually i dont know about avani avittam, today my brother’s daughter says in her friends home they will celebrate and she asked me more details.. at the time i just told some thing bla bla and leave her but she will ask me again.. she love to celebrate any festival with sweets,different menu…etc
Now i also eager to know more about this atleast answer to her.. any one know any specific recipies or sweets prepare for avani avittam or any specific foods prepare for breakfast and lunch.
Please tell me.

Now a days kids are asking so many questions.. for that atleast we have to know some thing to answer..
let come to avani avittam , yes it is normally celebrated by brahmins who change their old sacred thread(Poonal) on the day.But this also celebrate in different dates by different brahmins community like Rig,Yajur,sama..
They used to do breakfast with idly,sambar,chutney and any sweet like kesari .There is no rule for the particular item to be made for lunch they used to prepare
Lunch menu for Avanai Avittam (Here i just give some options)
Murgai Araithuvitta Sambar, tomato thayir pachadi,kothavarangai paruppu usuli,aviyal,lemon rasam, milk payasam, paruppu vadai, paurana poli,applam,curd
In north india moor kuzhambu,cucumber thayir pachadi,vazhakkai podimas,kathirkkai pitlai,paruppu rasam, moongdal paysam,medhu vadai, sweet poli,appalam, curd
Sambar,tomoto thokku,tomoto rasam,cabbage and peas poriyal,pumpkin and carrot poricha kootu,nei appam(sweet appam), vellai appam, coconut milk payasam ,appalam, curd

@ gmother, 2013 avani Avitam is been celebrated on august 20th..
An interesting news i read in onw website"In south v will call avani avitam, but in north India they will celebrate as raksha bandan,,is that true??did any one know about this??

The festival falls on the full-moon day of the Tamil month of Avani. Also known as ‘Upakarmam’ ..It is believed that it was on Avani Avittam that Lord Vishnu, incarnated as Lord Hayagriva, restored the Vedas stolen by the asuras to Lord Brahma.

Yes nalini, i also heard avani avittam celebrated as raksha bandhan in north india by other caste but this two functions are totally different..
