You’ve definitely seen it on TV. Your weird cousin goes to a doctor regularly to get it done. You also have a creepy uncle who tells you that he’s a pro at it. Yep, we’re talking about acupressure, the relatively safer alternative to acupuncture or as my 5-year-old niece once called it – more injections.
The idea behind acupressure is that by applying focused pressure on certain parts (or points) of the body, you stimulate blood and energy flow, which in turn relieves pains and – according to the Chinese, can also cures diseases.
My first exposure to acupressure was when I was 12 or 13 and I saw my mom repeated poke her chin. She told me that it was acupressure. Much like anyone who learns a new word, I tried using it conversations. My friends never did understand what I meant. But, ACUPRESSURE WORKS – and it works mainly because it is simple science based on the human anatomy.
Here are some common aches, pains and illnesses that can be cured by Acupressure.
Union Valley Point
This point is between thumb and index finger. By applying pressure or pinching this area, you can relieve a headache. Can be done by using index finger and thumb.
Third Eye Point
This point is above the nose bridge and between the eyebrows. Can also help with sinuses. Pressing and holding the finger several times before releasing helps to reduce a headache.

In order to locate this point, you can place your finger directly on the side of nostrils, below the cheekbones & have an alignment with the pupils. It is important to apply pressure for minimum 2 minutes.
Press between the indentations outside inner edge of eyebrows and nose on the bridge caused by them. It has many health benefits to overcome hay fever, foggy vision, etc.
This pressure point is really easy to find. It is placed on top of the foot. It’s between the 2nd toe and big toe. Apply pressure for 3 or 2 minutes to relieve eyestrain. If you can apply pressure to both at the same time do try, else apply pressure to one first.
At the back, the base of the skull, top of the spinal column there is a large hollow. This is where this pressure point is located at. Here use the plump part of the tip of the middle finger and apply pressure or use the thumb as its harder to press. Press for 2 minutes.
3. Stomach Ache
Sea of Energy
Take 2 finger width below the navel. Then apply pressure directly in that point below the navel. It helps to get rid of Gas & other problems. Keep pressing the point for few minutes.
Three Mile Point
Below 3 to 4 centimeters of Kneecap, move your foot and keep thumb or finger on the point. To know that it is the correct point, you can feel a muscle flex when you move the foot down and up.
Make sure that you place your hand in a way that the palm is facing you. Try to place 1st three fingers of other hand across the wrist. Then, keep the thumb on the location just below index finger. Try to press forefinger or thumb to press in a circular motion for 3 minutes.
4. Back Pain
Lower Back Points
The exact location of the points is between 3rd and 2nd Lumbar Vertebrae. They are at the waist level. It’s also known as the “Sea of Vitality”. These points also help in Sciatica.
Hip Bone Points
Hipbone points are at top of hipbone and buttock. These points are also known as “Womb and Vitals”. They are at the outer sacrum, the base of the spine. Even Pelvic stress can be relieved by applying pressure to these points.
Knee Back Points
They are easy to find, they are correctly placed in the centre of the backside of the kneecap in both feet. They can be also called as Commanding Middle. Apply strong pressure for many minutes and it recovers knee pain, arthritis, sciatica, and everything.
5. Neck Pain
This is an acupressure point which is in the shoulder muscle, halfway between the end of shoulder muscle and base of the neck. Pressing this point gives a great relief to neck and shoulder.
It’s on the occupational ridge, exactly at the side where spine enters skull in the tendon. Pressing here also relieves numbness, stiffness and pain. Sometimes even chronic cough can be relieved.
It is in muscle, below and behind the earlobe. Apply pressure here for 2 to 3 minutes. It also works to relieve a headache and shoulder stiffness.
This is a very common point for not only earache but also for hearing issues. It is noted to be at right in front of the earlobe, in above the ear. This point has to be pressed for 5 minutes using fingers which can relieve an earache. Also, can be used for a toothache.
Press this point for 3 to 4 minutes continuously. It helps in an earache, jaw pain, itchy ear, swollen throat, and toothache. This point is at the indention behind the earlobe.
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses this point widely. It can potentially cure 100 diseases. It can treat many other problems such as fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, etc. Also used in neurological, eye, even emotional disorders including seizures. It is at the top center of the head.
7. Shoulder Pain
It is a one-half inch below the top of shoulders. To locate it better, on shoulders, midway between outside of shoulders and base of the neck. It is Point C on the diagram. It also helps stiff necks, muscular pain, etc.
Gates of Consciousness
It can vary 2 to 3 inches depending on head size. It is lower to the base of the skull, it’s in the hollow between two vertical neck muscles. It can also help in arthritis in neck, and also help stiff neck. Press this point several times to relieve pain.
From Side of lower neck, it is two or one inch out. It can be located on muscle at the highest point of shoulder. It also helps in nervousness, fatigue & irritability.
8. Tooth Ache
This point is also a first aid recovery point. It’s known as “Cheek Bone Hole”. It is at cheek bone’s lower edge, directly down from the outer corner of the eye, also can be located on the lower edge of the nose.
This point can be used to cure all types of chronic pain. It is also an anti-inflammatory and decongestant point for not only toothaches but also for fever, skin diseases, eye problems, etc. It is termed the Union Valley point, located in highest point of flesh that joins index finger and thumb.
Sometimes a toothache can be caused due to excessive stomach fire or heat. This point reduces stomach fire, also called “Inner Court”. It’s at top of foot, the margin between 3rd and 2nd toe.
9. Knee Pain
Calf Nose Point
It’s outside of knee cap. It’s on both legs. The correct spot is on the image above. It also helps to reduce Knee stiffness, Rheumatism, Edema, etc. It has to be pressed 3 minutes on each leg.
Place fingers on this point. Move fingers down and up same pressure, this stimulates the point. This can also cure genital disorders. Keep pressing this 3 times each day to get quicker results. It can be found on the back of kneecap, inside edge of knee crease. It’s the hollow between tendons.
Commanding Activity Point
It’s reached by moving fingers to the backside of the kneecap. It is correctly present in the crease, at the edge of the crease. It can be seen in the image above. Pressing here reduces stiffness and Knee Pain.
10. Heel Pain

This point is easy to locate. It is in the flesh between index finger and thumb. It helps to overcome Painful periods also. It also makes you calm and relaxed. Also, can be used for digestive problems.
