Avani Avittam is on august 20th,2013..

Avani Avittam (Tamil: ஆவணி அவிட்டம்) refers to the day corresponding to the Śravishthā nakshatra..Avani avittam is celebrated by the all over the worl by indains and bramins.
On Yajurveda Upakarma day, Brahmins ritually change their Upanayana thread along with Shrauta rituals. Upakarma which is a Vedic ritual is still practiced by Hindus of Brahmin caste.
Upakarma is known as Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu. The next day of Avani Avittam is known as Gayathiri Japam
On the Purnima day in Shravan month (July – August), Brahmins who follow the Yajur Veda perform the sacred thread changing ceremony known as Yagnopaveetha Dharana or Janeyu Dharana. It is part of the Vedic rituals. Children also commence the study of Vedas on the day.The popular belief is that Lord Hayagriva, an Avatara of Lord Vishnu, got back the Vedas stolen by demons on this day. This ritual is not observed by most North Indian Brahmin communities.Special mantras are chanted while performing the ceremony.
