Good nutrition is another crucial step in having a healthy baby. Those extra calories that are gained during pregnancy should be nutritious ones, however, “Weight gains between 6 and 8 kilos is normal. However, excess weight will gain, increased chances of diabetes in pregnancy, especially since Indians are prone to diabetes,” says Dr. Geetha.
A pregnant woman needs a balanced diet complete with proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and a minimum of sweets and fats. Calcium and iron are also especially important during pregnancy. Getting enough Calcium will help prevent a mother from losing her own bone density as the foetus uses the mineral for bone growth. Iron helps both the mother and baby’s blood carry oxygen. “Pregnant women must consume folic acid and iron tablets as their amount is not enough in the natural supplement,” says Dr. Geetha.
