Kalaripayattu is a martial art, which was born as a style in southern India. It was normally practised in northern and central parts of Kerala and southern parts of Tamil Nadu.
Meenakshi Amma from Puthupadam, Kerala at the age of 74 is possibly the most experienced Kalaripayattu practitioner ever, let alone female practitioners. She has a whopping 67 years of experience. She started training for the art at the age of 7 and dedicated her life to learning, practising and imparting the art to other. Today she runs her own training centre that has helped thousand other similar enthusiasts from all age groups from Kerala, other parts of India and the world.
150 students are regularly being trained under her and she gives 60 plus live performances every year. Classes are held from June to September every year thrice a day, teaching the style of Kalaripayattu including massages for aches and pains. The most special thing about the school is that it runs on a “no fee” principle.
Meenakshi Amma says that the passion she developed towards learning Kalaripayattu at a very young age made her an expert in this martial art. While questioned on the challenges she faced as a female practitioner, she said that the gender does not make a difference when it comes to practising arts and passion is what makes you an expert. She also said that age is just a number and she would continue to practice and build the art by training other young people as long as she has the energy to do it.
