In a wonderful coming of age gesture, the Indian Cricket Team wore jerseys that had their mothers’ names in the 5th One Day International match of the Paytm series against New Zealand as part of a new campaign “Nayi Soch” by official broadcasters Star Sports. The initiative is aimed at giving respect to the mothers’ contribution in shaping the players’ careers.
“It’s an initiative to appreciate the contribution of moms”, said the Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni while wearing a jersey that sported his mother’s name Devaki above his jersey number 7, instead of his usual surname Dhoni.

Captain Dhoni, Indian Test team captain Virat Kohli and opener Ajinkya Rahane also featured in TV advertisements to promote this campaign. “Whatever it is I am today, it is because of my mother. So obviously why should my identity be linked only to my father’s name? I am as much a Saroj as I am a Kohli”, asks Kohli in the advertisement.

As one would expect, the campaign has been received with great reception by the public. We hope there would be many more such positive campaigns from BCCI and cricket players.
