                  Food ofcourse plays a major part for festivals of lights in india . Here are some yummy Diwali sweets and savories to make during the festival that’s coming on Nov 2nd 2013. Nothing beats making the traditional recipes and here they are made easier with clear and precise instructions.

                  Every year my mom and grand maa will do different variety of sweets for diwali festival…My grand maa is sweet expert , she will prepare asoka halwa,jaggery,wheat laduu,Murukku,Adhirasam,Somas,Gulab jamun and Bholi…She like to prepare new dishes at home, Grand maa like to cook different dishes by watching tv r else by reading in magazines…

                  So that this time, me planned to cook different variety of sweet other than our usual preparation sweets…



Asoka Halwa Recipes to prepare at home :



1 cup Moong dal
2 tsp Wheat flour
1 and 1/2 cup Sugar
A pinch Food colour (Red)
1 tsp Cardamom powder
10-15 Cashew nuts
1 cup Ghee

Method for asoka halwa preparation:

Heat a tsp of ghee in a kadai.Roast the moong dal till raw smell goes.

Add 1/4 cup water to 1 cup moong dhal and cook in pressure cooker until it becomes soft and keep aside.

If the doesn’t cook well then give a grind in blender.

In same kadai fry the cashews and wheat flour separately and keep aside.

Now add the dhal into the kadai and then add in the sugar.

After adding the sugar the mix will be like water.Now add the roasted wheat and cardamom powder,mix it well.

Add in the colour and mix it without lumps.

Add the remaining ghee , cashews nuts and keep stirring.

Stir well till it should become a non sticky paste but not too hard.

At this final stage remove the Kadai from the stove.




Jangiri recipe For Diwali Festival:




Urad Dal – 250 gms
Raw Rice – 1 tblsp
Sugar – 1 1/4 kgs
Ghee – 1/2 kg
Water – 500 ml
Cardamom Powder – 1/4 tsp
Kesari Powder – 1/4 tsp






Method of Preparation:


Soak the dhal and rice for 45 minutes.

Grind together coarsely and add kesari powder.

Boil the water and sugar till it reaches a one string consistency.

Add 1 tsp of milk and remove the impurities that rise up.

Remove and add cardamom powder. Stir well.

Sprinkle a little water on the coarse batter and grind to a smooth paste.

Heat ghee in a pan over medium flame.

Add some of the dough to a cone shaped jangiri cloth with a small nozzle.

Gently press over the hot ghee to a jangiri shape and cook till done on both sides.
Ensure the jangiri is not crisp.

Remove and put it in the sugar syrup.

Allow it to soak for a minute or two.

Remove and transfer to a plate and serve to family…




Somas Recipes For Diwali Festival:



1 and 1/2 cups Madai/Plain Flour
2 tbsp Rava
1/4 cup Oil/Ghee
Enough water to Knead the Flour(i need 1/4 cup)
Oil for deep Frying
A Pinch Salt

For Filling:

1 tsp Ghee
1/4 cup Dry/grated Coconut(i used desiccated coconut)
3 Cardamom
3 tbsp Roasted Bengal Gram(powdered)
1/4 cup Sugar(powdered)






Method For Preparation:


Add the Madai flour,Rava,Salt and oil in a mixing bowl.Knead the flour by adding the water little by little into soft dough.

Make the soft dough and cover it with wet cloth and keep aside for 15mins.

Meanwhile Prepare the filling,here i used desiccated coconut,you can use dry/grated coconut.Powdered the roasted Bengal gram dal and sugar with cardamom, separately.

Heat the pan and add ghee into it.Add the Powdered Bengal gram dal,sugar and cardamom powder,coconut and roast it for 10 mins/till turns light brown.

Make the dough into poori size and keep the roasted mix in the middle.

Keep this dough in the mould  and close it or just close by pressing the edges with fork and Make ready the Somas for frying.

Heat the oil in a kadai add the somas one by one and deep fry them.once fried take it out.
